Idioms and Phrases for Salary Negotiations

December 4, 2020 Posted by Kristine Advanced Vocabulary

Introduction

Hello! It’s Kristine here with the Express to Impress podcast. This episode is part two of Salary Expectations: How to Answer This Interview Question. You will learn five new English idioms and phrases.

You’ll also get some homework at the end so you can continue to improve your English communication skills.

You may wonder why I produce episodes with the definitions of English idioms and phrases. Well, I used to be an English teacher with a focus on teaching Business English. Nearly all of my students, even those with high English proficiency, struggled with English idioms and phrases in the workplace. So, I sprinkle in idioms and phrases naturally in my episodes and provide the definitions to help my listeners expand their vocabulary and communicate better with native English speakers in their daily lives and the workplace.

Don’t forget to subscribe to receive notifications whenever I release a new episode. You can subscribe anywhere you download podcasts like Pandora, Apple Podcasts, or my website at www.express-to-impress.com.

Now, let’s begin!

Idioms and Phrases to Expand Your English Vocabulary

Won’t Fly

But of course, that answer won’t fly in an interview.

This idiom means something won’t work or won’t be approved.

Give (Someone) a Headache

Just be sure to reassure the interviewer that you are reasonable and won’t give them a headache about salary down the line.

This means to irritate someone intensely or even to exasperate them.

Down the Line

Just be sure to reassure the interviewer that you are reasonable and won’t give them a headache about salary down the line.

This idiom means in the future.

Another Story

Yet, interviews are another story.

We use this phrase to say that one thing is very different from another.

Knock (One’s) Socks Off

You’ll knock their socks off and get a job offer, too.

You may recall from previous episodes that knock one’s socks off means to thoroughly impress, overwhelm, or excite someone.
