Special Announcement

Before we get started, I am very excited to announce that I recently welcomed the very first guest on the Express to Impress podcast. On Friday, February 26, you can hear a conversation I had recently with Allyson Pluhmberg, founder of Rooted Accents: Solutions for Accent Modification. We talk about the American English Accent and accent modification in our conversation. Allyson shares some great tips for English Language learners who want to connect better with native English speakers. You won’t want to miss this one, so stay tuned!

Now, let’s begin!

English Phrases and Idioms

Have a Leg Up

But some people have a leg up with language learning, and it has nothing to do with their natural ability to learn a language.

Having a leg up means having an advantage over other people.

To Go Above and Beyond (Something)

And before sending each email, she asked me to review it for accuracy and clarity. Talk about going above and beyond!

Going above and beyond means doing more or better than what is expected.

Many Moons Ago

Many moons ago, my host mother in Guadalajara told me “Que te vayas bien” each morning.

This old-fashioned expression means a long time ago.

Alright! That’s all of the English Phrases and Idioms we’ll be talking about today.

Communication and Interview Coach Kristine working with a client one-on-one

Coaching Available

The best part of my day is working with driven professionals determined to achieve their goals. Yesterday was no exception. While meeting with my client for the tenth and final time before his important MBA interviews with US universities, I felt awe. It was 6:30 am in his time zone. His voice was hoarse, and he frequently stopped to drink hot tea. Yet, he spoke in a clear and organized manner. His face lit up, and I wanted to hear every word he had to say. Because of his commitment, he truly transformed how he used the English language. I was confident English communication would not stand in the way of his goals.

When you need to communicate effectively in an important situation–like the opportunity-of-a-lifetime interview–I would gladly be by your side to offer you support and guidance. There’s no reason your English communication skills should deflect someone’s attention away from your talent.

If you need an interview coach and an English coach, you can schedule a free consultation or book a mock interview on my website at express-to-impress.com.

English Learning Homework

Alright, learning takes repetition and implementation, and I can’t resist the English teacher in me. So, I’ll give you some homework! Listen to this episode again and repeat the words out loud. It will not only expand your knowledge of English Phrases and Idioms but help you to improve your American English pronunciation, listening skills, and intonation. You’ll be doing the Shadowing Technique! If you need a reminder about implementing the Shadowing Technique, check out episode 15, Introducing the Shadowing Technique for English Learning.

If there’s something I can do to support you, write me an email at hello@express-to-impress.com, and I’ll be happy to help out.

Thank you so much for listening to the Express to Impress podcast. If you found this episode helpful, please share it with a friend. See you next time. Bye!
