Keep an Eye Out and More Idioms and Phrases

October 16, 2020 Posted by Kristine Advanced Vocabulary

Introduction

Hello! It’s Kristine here with the Express to Impress podcast. This episode is part two of How to Find a Job Using LinkedIn. It will be a short episode today! You will learn four new idioms and phrases. Expanding your English vocabulary will allow you to understand and connect with native English speakers.

You’ll also get some homework at the end so you can continue to improve your English communication skills.

If you like my podcast, don’t forget to subscribe to receive notifications whenever I release a new episode. You can subscribe anywhere you download podcasts like Pandora, Apple Podcasts, or my website at www.express-to-impress.com.

Now, let’s begin!

English Phrases and Idioms

What (One) Can Gather

From what I can gather, it seems they are likely talking about recruitment practices in the US.

This phrase means someone believes something to be true.

Ask Around

If you’re unsure how popular LinkedIn is in your country, ask around, and let me know what you find out!

“Ask Around” means to ask several people for information or advice.

Keep (An) Eye Out

While Amelia had a great job, she wanted a new challenge and kept her eye out for openings.

Saying “keep an eye out” refers to remaining vigilant or watching for something carefully.

Pop Up

She’d apply for a job just when something exceptional popped up.

“Popping Up” means something appears or occurs suddenly.

How to Get Your Next Job Online Video Course

I produce this podcast as a way to help international professionals improve their communication skills so they can get and thrive in a job in an English-speaking workplace. I also provide an intense online video course for people wanting to get a job in English. Of course, I’m always thrilled when someone writes to tell me about their experience taking the course. Here’s what Vesela, a Marketing Manager in Munich, Germany had to say about it.

This course can give you a fresh perspective and be really helpful. I loved the handouts and the materials; they will definitely help me! Now, I look at the application process like a research project and also realized how important networking is. I will activate my network and use all the “Job Search” trackers that will help me stay on top of the application process. I would absolutely recommend the course.

You can view four of the lessons in the course for free on my website at www.express-to-impress.com. That’s 20 minutes of the course completely free! And great news! I’m offering 30% off until October 31 with the code deal30. So, what are you waiting for? I can’t wait to see you land a job you love!

English Learning Homework

Alright, that’s all of the idioms and phrases for today! Learning takes repetition and implementation. So, I’ll give you some homework! Listen to this episode again and repeat the words out loud to practice. It will help you to improve your American pronunciation, among other things.

If you liked this episode, please pick one of the following to support it: Rate it, leave a comment, or share it with a friend!
